What is shockwave therapy?
Shockwave therapy uses mechanical pressure waves delivered to a targeted area of the body. Despite the name, there is no electrical shock involved. Treatment settings and protocols vary, which is one reason why research findings aren't always directly comparable. For chronic low back pain, systematic reviews have reported improvements in pain and disability following shockwave treatment (Liu et al., 2023; Wu et al., 2023).
Why might it help?
Back pain is rarely as simple as one "damaged" structure. Your spine, muscles, joints and nervous system all contribute to how you move and experience pain. Your activity levels, work, sleep, training and confidence can also influence your symptoms. That's why treatment needs to look beyond the painful area. A 2026 systematic review and network meta-analysis found that shockwave combined with conventional physical therapy ranked highest for improving pain and function among the treatment approaches studied (Qiao et al., 2026). This supports a simple idea: Don't just treat the pain. Build the person.

You don't need to find the "perfect" posture or avoid every movement that causes discomfort. You need to gradually build the capacity and confidence to move.

Shockwave may be considered for some people with persistent or chronic low back pain following an appropriate assessment. It isn't appropriate for every person or every cause of back pain.
